Banharn and Newin

Bhum Jai Thai didn't have a candidate in yesterday's by-election in Sri Saket, but they were understood to be helping the Chat Thai Pattana (CTP) behind the scenes. Nevertheless, it is interesting that publicly Banharn wanted to avoide any association between the CTP candidate and Newin as the Bangkok Post reports:

Chart Thai Pattana's de facto leader Banharn Silpa-archa has been calling his supporters in an attempt to lessen the impact of Thaksin's phone-ins.

Mr Banharn told locals that the Chart Thai Pattana candidate had nothing to do with Bhumjaithai's de facto leader Newin Chidchob.

Mr Siripong said Chart Thai Pattana was organising campaign rallies in every tambon to confront Puea Thai and Mr Banharn had phoned in to every rally.

Bhumjaithai and Chart Thai Pattana sources said that despite Mr Banharn trying to distance his candidate from Mr Newin, Bhumjaithai members were quietly helping Mrs Sakulthip's efforts to win the by-election

BP: So how popular is Newin in the Northeast? Newin is a behind-the-scenes player so doesn't have, outside of Buriram, many achievements and Puea Thai have been labelling him as someone who turned on Thaksin. So far it seems to be working.

btw, in case you are thinking that Chat Thai Pattana never stood chance as the Post article notes the candidate's son won one of the seats in 2007 and her husband is the mayor of Sri Saket town which appears to be the largest district by population in Constitutency No. 1.
